  Introduction ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hirohiko Nakano was born in Yamaguchi prefecture in 1927. He grew up in Kyoto and studied Japanese Painting at Kyoto City Arts and Crafts High school.
He continues his studies in college on Philosophy.
Influenced by Martin Heidegger or Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche, his works constantly questioned “What is painting?” ”What is human?” .
Hirohiko Nakano finds his thoughts and expressions through Fujiwara no Teika, Kamo no Choumei, Matsuo Basho and Taneda Santoka.
He believed each artist is a philosopher. So, the base of all his works contained the proposition of vanity of life.
In this exhibition, over 40 artworks from Hirohiko Nakano’s last work to folding screens are exhibited.

Yoshitomo Kajikawa, Director of Kahitsukan - Kyoto Museum of Contemporary Art
