  Introduction ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Masanao Yoshinaka was born in Osaka in 1942 and died in 2016. He studied art history in Waseda University. After graduation, he worked at a car dealership for several years. At the age of 26, he decided to become a professional painter and quit the job. He then began to practice on his own variety of painting techniques, such as watercolor painting, oil painting, tempera painting and so on.

His name gradually became known in Tokyo, Osaka and in some East Asian countries. In 1988, he was entitled to government sponsorship (sponsorship by the Agency for Cultural Affairs) and studied in a Korean university under the artist overseas training program. In 1989, he won MOMOAT (The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo) prize at 19th Japan Contemporary Art Exhibition. Besides his line of work, he taught at Osaka University of Art and raised young painters.

In the course of his career, he left multiple series of paintings in which he seems to explore different ways of expression. Despite of those transitions observed in his paintings, it is important to know that sketching remained his primary interest. He used to refer to sketching “practical philosophy” and kept brushing up relevant skills throughout his life. This particular devotion to sketching gives unique value to his works when they’re seen in the context of Japanese contemporary art.

We are honored to hold the first retrospective exhibition featuring nearly 50 masterpieces including ones painted in his late years. We hope you enjoy the visit.

Yoshitomo KAJIKAWA, Director of Kahitsukan - Kyoto Museum of Contemporary Art
